Walk or Bike Across Hog’s Back Bridge

On Monday, April 12, Hog’s Back Road was closed west of Colonel By Drive to the Rideau Canoe Club for swing bridge repairs that will last 8 months. Immediately afterwards, Hog’s Back Road will be closed from Riverside Drive to Colonel By for repairs to the fixed bridge.

The project is expected to be fully completed by December 2020 but pedestrian and cycle traffic will be maintained throughout using a detour over a newly constructed foot bridge.

This month, registration opened for Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 recreation programs at the city’s many community centres. The Recreation eGuide offers residents a wide variety of activities in their neighbourhoods including swimming lessons, fitness classes and skating programs.

City to decorate street signs to honour Lebanese poet

On June 26, the City of Ottawa will consider a motion to hang decorative street-sign blades along Ridgewood Avenue to honour the famous Lebanese poet Gibran Khalil Gibran. The motion comes at the request of St. Elias Cathedral in advance of the Ottawa Lebanese Festival, which will run from July 17 to 21, 2019. The street name will remain unchanged and all costs would be borne by St. Elias.

Changes coming to Ottawa’s Green Bin Program

Starting July 2, 2019, plastic bags can be used as a bagging option for household organics in the green bin. Pet waste will also be accepted – including dog waste and kitty litter. These changes are meant to attract users to the program and divert organics from landfill, but paper liners are still better than plastic.

Proposed Development at 770 Brookfield Rd.

On June 27, the City’s Planning Committee will consider a development application for 716-770 Brookfield Road. The proposal is to develop the site in two phases with ground floor commercial along the Brookfield Road frontage and residential buildings marketed to post-secondary student housing proposing approximately 830 units at complete build out.
