About the Village Model:
Villages are intentional caring communities — a cost-effective life care model for a rapidly aging society. They enable older adults to remain safe and independent in their homes with purpose, choices and relationships that contribute to healthier, happier lives.
Village to Village is grassroots, community-based organization powered by volunteers. It operates on a philosophy of self-help and peer-to-peer reciprocity. Village volunteers provide a variety of support services, including light home maintenance, tech support and friendly visits. They coordinate engaging social, educational, and cultural activities that promote personal connections through shared interests and experiences. Villages generate opportunities and choices for older adults to remain active and age successfully
We are a small group of residents here in Riverside Park with a dream to create this model in our neighbourhood. We see relationships between new friends that will support our neighbours to “age in place” in their homes – Riverside Park residents caring for their own.
As we begin our journey, we are asking for your reaction to these directions:
- Young residents offering their talents to “young at heart” residents – be matched with a neighbour that you could support by helping with repairs and upkeep, grocery shopping, phone calls, assistance with becoming more IT savvy (vaccine passport) all the while providing friendship at the same time.
- Tell us of a program that you know of that provides conversation and entertainment for the housebound.
- Other organizations in the Riverside Park area that may be offering similar resources.
